SMOKE MEDICINE: HOME CLEANSING RITUAL

Using smoke medicine is one of the ways to energetically cleanse a space to invite positive energy.

As the smoke ascends, our wishes and intentions rise and mingle into the universe, connecting heaven, earth and humanity.

A cleansing “smoke bath” is used to purify the body, aura, energy, ceremonial/ritual space or any other space and personal articles. When purifying our body/aura and space, we call on the spirits of sacred plants to drive away negative energies and restore balance. Plants such as Sage, Cedar, Sweetgrass and Palo Santo are burned and the smoke is directed with a single feather or a fan made of several feathers.

Sacred Plant Medicine

Sage “The Purifier”

Sage is a sacred plant that has been used since ancient times. It is known as a purifier. Using sage is an ancient practice from Native American and other indigenous cultures. It’s a purifying “smoke bath” that can be used to cleanse a person, place, object, or space of negative energies and influences.

When working with Sage ask the plant-medicine spirit of the sage to be there with you, and ask that it assist in purifying and cleansing your space, and yourself and your crystals or any other divination tools. “I ask that the plant spirit of sage to please remove and release any negative energy from this space.”

Palo –Santo – “The Aromatic”

Palo Santo means “Holy Wood”. This sacred wood comes from the mystical tree of Palo Santo that grows on the coast of South America. Palo Santo brings extraordinary blessings and good fortune.

“I ask plant spirit of Palo Santo to please bring blessings into the space.

Cedar

Cedar is used to heighten positive energy, to uplift feelings and evoke positive emotions. Cedar is also used to manifest prosperity and good fortune. Cedar holds the medicine to purify and return balance.

Sweetgrass

Sweetgrass is the sacred hair of Mother Earth; its sweet aroma reminds people of the gentleness, love and kindness she has for the people; the braid represents love, kindness and honesty. Sweetgrass is used for purification of the spirit; when Sweetgrass is used in a healing or talking circle it has a calming effect.

Smoke Medicine Tool Kit

There are four elements involved:

  • The container, traditionally a shell representing Water, is the first element.

  • The sacred plants (Sage, Sweetgrass, or Cedar - choose one or all), gifts from mother earth, represent the second element, Earth.

  • The fire produced from lighting the sacred plants represents the third element, Fire.

  • The smoke produced from the fire represents Air, the fourth element.

Ritual Steps:

Do this space clearing ritual at a time during the day when you can open the windows.

  1. Raise your blinds and pull back the curtains in each room.

  2. Remove clutter – Negative energy likes to hang out in clutter, cluttered corners, and behind doors.

  3. Start at the front door (or entrance into your home), light the sage (either with a candle, match or lighter).

  4. Let the sage burn for 30 – 45 sec, then extinguish the flame and leave the smoking sage.

  5. State your intention or mantra: " I ask that the plant spirit of sage to please remove and release any negative energy from this space. I ask that you accept this medicine and purify me. I ask that you remove all negative energies, negative thoughts, negative words, or any energies that are here not for my highest good or for the highest good of all who live here. I ask that you remove all fear, pain and sickness, and do not let them return”.

  6. Sage yourself or anyone else that is with you.

  7. Start by saging your front door, moving to the hallway, basement and any room in the basement, main floor and then the top floor.

  8. Each room entered: you will start in clockwise direction starting with corner to your left. Moving around the room in a clockwise direction ending at the door. Be sure to get to all the dark corners, behind the door, and closets. Windows are also cleansed starting with the bottom left hand corner, working your way up and around, meeting back to where you started. Then you can sage the room, furniture, or beds etc.)

  9. Leave the windows closed and leave the room closing the door behind you. (This allows the negative energy to come to the centre of the room, prior to opening your window and releasing the energy.)

  10. Start the next room and continue doing steps 8-9 for each room on each floor.

  11. Once you have cleansed the entire home, go to each room and space starting from the front door and open each door and window in each room. (Be sure to put your fur babies in their crate or keep them close so they do not run outside!)

  12. Leave the windows and door open for 10-15 minutes. Allowing all the negative energy to remove and release itself from your space.

  13. After 15 min. close the doors and windows to begin The Palo Santo Ritual below.

Palo Santo Ritual

Bringing in blessing, harmony, love and joy into your home.

2. Light your Palo Santo stick. Let the stick catch fire and allow it to burn for 30-45 second then extinguish and leave the Palo Santo smoking.

4. Give yourself a aromatic smoke bath with Palo Santo and then start moving through your home with your Palo Santo, stating your intention.
